God in Today’s World
In today’s fast-paced, ever-changing world, the idea of obeying God can sometimes feel like a daunting challenge. With so many voices and influences competing for our attention, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and unsure of where to turn. Yet, amid all the noise, God’s voice remains constant and true. It calls us to a life of obedience, love, and integrity, no matter the circumstances.
Obeying God starts with understanding His Word. The Bible is our Guidebook, providing wisdom and direction for every aspect of our lives. It teaches us about the nature of God, His love for us, and His expectations for how we should live. In a world that often promotes self-interest and instant gratification, the Bible reminds us to seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness.
“But seek first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” (Matthew 6:33)
For teens and young adults, this journey of obedience may seem particularly challenging. Peer pressure, social media, and societal norms can all push us in directions that conflict with our faith. But it’s in these moments that our commitment to God is truly tested and refined. Remember, true obedience is not about following rules out of obligation, but about aligning our hearts with God’s will out of love and reverence for Him.
“If you love me, keep my commandments.” (John 14:15)
One of the most profound ways we can obey God is by loving others. Jesus Himself emphasized the importance of love, stating that all the law and the prophets hang on the commandments to love God and love our neighbors as ourselves.
“Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love your neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.” (Matthew 22:37-40)
This kind of love is not merely an emotion but an action, a daily choice to put others’ needs before our own, to show kindness and compassion, and to seek the well-being of those around us.
However, loving others does not mean losing our sense of self or compromising our values. It IS possible to love deeply and sacrificially while maintaining our personal boundaries and integrity. In fact, healthy boundaries are essential for authentic relationships. They allow us to give freely and generously without feeling depleted or resentful.
“Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as you have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” (Hebrews 13:5)
In practical terms, this means being clear about our values and priorities. It means saying “no” to activities or behaviors that conflict with our faith and seeking out relationships and communities that support and encourage our walk with God. It means being intentional about our time, our words, and our actions, always striving to reflect the love and holiness of Christ.
Obeying God also involves listening to His voice through prayer and the Holy Spirit. In the hustle and bustle of daily life, it’s crucial to make time for quiet reflection and communion with God. This is where we find the strength and guidance to navigate the complexities of life. God’s voice may not always be loud or obvious, but it is always there, gently leading us on the path of righteousness.
“Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.” (Psalm 46:10)
In times of uncertainty and confusion, when the world seems to be falling apart, our hope remains anchored in Christ. We know that He is coming again, and our ultimate goal is to be ready for His return. This hope gives us the courage to live differently, to stand firm in our faith, and to be a light in the darkness.
“For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;” (Titus 2:11-13)
As young believers, you have a unique opportunity to make a difference in the world. Your passion, energy, and fresh perspective are valuable assets in God’s Kingdom. Embrace your identity in Christ, and let His love and truth shine through you in everything you do.
Embracing God’s teachings and integrating them into daily life often means making counter-cultural choices. It’s not always easy to stand firm in your faith when societal norms and peer pressures urge you to conform. But remember, God’s call is not to an easy life but to a fulfilling one, aligned with His eternal purposes.
Consider (read now) the example of Daniel in the Bible, a young man who remained faithful to God despite living in a culture that was hostile to his beliefs. Daniel’s dedication to prayer and his refusal to compromise his values set him apart and allowed God to use him in extraordinary ways. His story serves as a powerful reminder that obedience to God often requires courage and perseverance but ultimately leads to greater blessings and opportunities to witness for Christ.
“Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime.” (Daniel 6:10). He did not change his habits because of the writing.
In your own life, you may face situations where obeying God requires difficult choices. Perhaps it’s standing up for what is right, even when it’s unpopular, or choosing integrity over convenience. It might mean prioritizing your relationship with God over social activities or making time for service and ministry despite a busy schedule. These decisions are not always easy, but they are vital in your journey of faith.
Additionally, it’s important to surround yourself with a supportive community. Find friends and mentors who share your values and encourage your spiritual growth. Engage in church activities, youth groups, and Bible studies where you can learn, share, and grow together. These relationships provide strength and accountability, helping you stay grounded in your faith.
Obeying God also involves stewardship—using the gifts, talents, and resources He has entrusted to you for His glory. Discover your unique strengths and look for ways to serve others and contribute to God’s work with them. Whether it’s through volunteering, creative arts, leadership, or everyday acts of kindness, your contributions matter and make a difference.
“As every man has received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.” (1 Peter 4:10)
Remember, God’s expectations are not about perfection but about a sincere heart that seeks to honor Him. He knows our struggles and provides grace and forgiveness when we fall short. The journey of obedience is a continuous process of learning, growing, and becoming more like Christ.
“But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.” (2 Peter 3:18)
Obeying God in today’s world is about living a life that reflects His love, truth, and holiness. It’s about making choices that align with His Word, even when it’s challenging. It’s about loving others without compromising your values and maintaining your personal integrity. It’s about staying connected to God through prayer and the Holy Spirit, finding strength and guidance in His presence. And most importantly, it’s about being ready for Christ’s return, living with hope and purpose in the light of eternity.
May you find joy, strength, and fulfillment in your journey of obedience, knowing that you are part of God’s eternal story. Embrace your faith, stand firm in your beliefs, and let your life be a testimony to the goodness and faithfulness of God.
