DISCIPLINE OF TRUTH: A DIVINE PERSPECTIVE

(c) 2024 Anna M. K. Hazen

In our lives, every new beginning often comes with a pivotal choice that shapes its course: the choice to embrace the truth. Whether stepping into a new job, relocating to a bustling city, or embarking on a blossoming relationship, the foundation of these transitions is firmly planted in how we engage with truth—both about ourselves and about others. The discipline of truth is vital; it liberates us from the chains of our past and illuminates unfamiliar paths ahead. Sorry, folks, but truth doesn’t come with GPS—you have to navigate it boldly!

As Jesus wisely noted, “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32). This illuminating verse reminds us that knowledge of the truth leads to freedom. However, let’s not kid ourselves—freedom isn’t just a walk in the park; it requires a hefty dose of discipline. After all, the path to truth may feel like a hike up a mountain—rigorous at times, but the view from the top is simply divine!

The Word of God: Our Anchor in Truth
The Bible underscores the significance of truth in various forms, showcasing its paramount importance in our lives. Ephesians 4:15 declares, “But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ.” Here, we see that truth-telling isn’t merely a checklist item; it’s woven intricately with love. In our new beginnings, how we communicate truth can determine whether our relationships flourish like a well-watered garden or will it wither away like last week’s produce.

David, in his heart-rending Psalm 51:6, penned, “Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.” Ah, a lovely reminder that it’s not enough to just polish the outside—God desires authenticity that starts from the inside out. It’s often more comfortable to project perfection to the world, but true growth and wisdom come from embracing the whole truth within ourselves, even the parts that might be dusty or in desperate need of a little spring cleaning.

Moreover, Proverbs 3:3-4 advises, “Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart: So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.” Here, we witness a beautiful synergy between mercy, truth, and favor; it’s like a divine trio! A life enriched with truth leads not only to a closer relationship with God but also cultivates connections with others that are both deep and meaningful.

Real-Life Examples of Embracing Truth

1. A Testimony of Redemption
Consider the story of “Red”, a man whose life spiraled downward due to addiction. For years, he navigated life with denial as his trusty co-pilot, drifting away from friends and family. It wasn’t until a moment of heart-stopping truth—delivered with love and concern by his best friend—that a transformation began. This friend didn’t merely throw him a life raft; he reminded “Red” of his inherent worth and the reality of his situation. With faith-based counseling and a supportive community rallying around him, “Red” tapped into newfound strength to reclaim his life. It was his courageous commitment to face those uncomfortable truths that ushered in a new beginning, now filled with purpose and genuine connections.

2. Mending Broken Relationships
Maria and Tom, a couple long married, found themselves adrift in a sea of uncommunicated issues. Their conversations often devolved into what felt like a verbal battlefield rather than the constructive dialogues they once had. Enter a marriage retreat centered on truth-telling exercises! They learned the art of expressing their feelings honestly while actively listening to one another. By choosing to speak the truth in love, they gradually mended their relationship. The willingness to tackle uncomfortable truths about their needs not only revived their union but transformed it into a partnership grounded in profound understanding and respect. Talk about whipping up a love potion! (see my Marriage Seminar)

3. Professional Integrity
Angela, a manager at a rising tech company, found herself at a crossroads when she unearthed irregularities in financial reporting. Many of her peers might have chosen silence as their ally, fearing the fallout. However, Angela recognized that true integrity demanded the discipline of truth. By confronting the issue directly and cultivating a culture of transparency within her team, she didn’t just protect the company—she paved the way for innovation to flourish. Her unyielding commitment to truth reaped rewards: a stronger, more cohesive team and a triumphant product launch that thrived because honesty was at its core.

The Process of Embracing Truth
Embracing the discipline of truth involves several joyful (and sometimes challenging) steps:

1. Self-Reflection: Begin with a heart-to-heart with yourself. Are there areas where you’ve lived in denial? Awareness is the key to confronting and reshaping your reality.

2. Openness to Correction: Surrounding yourself with truth-speaking individuals is essential. Proverbs 27:17 reminds us, “Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.” Seek friendships that challenge you to grow and improve—even if it means biting on some humble pie now and then!

3. Commitment to Growth: Make a bold commitment to practice truth in every aspect of your life. If it feels daunting, start small—be truthful in your words and actions. As you do, you’ll witness the transformation in your relationships and circumstances blossom like spring flowers after a long winter.

The journey into new beginnings may often be clouded with uncertainty, but the discipline of truth serves as our unwavering foundation. By committing to truth—about ourselves, our relationships, and our circumstances—we clear away the clutter of deception, making way for new paths to emerge.

As we tread this truth-lit path, God honors our efforts. Just as He desires truth from within us, He equips us with wisdom for each glorious new beginning. So embrace this monumental discipline, for through truth, we unlock profound freedom and growth—opening doors to the fantastic new adventures that God has in store for us!

As you navigate your own journey, take a moment to reflect: Where is God nudging you towards greater truth? What comforting lies have kept you shackled from moving forward? Embrace the discipline of truth, and you’ll find the courage to step boldly into new beginnings filled with hope, grace, and possibility.

And remember, keep those spiritual wicks trimmed and your oil lamps filled—after all, as the good book reminds us, **THE KING IS COMING!**
